Brake line layout

Each kit replaces every hard line on the vehicle: the master cylinder lines, one line to each front wheel hose, the long rear main line down the frame, and two short lines across the rear axle.

Mastercylinder ABS module(EBCM / BPMV) LF wheel hose RF wheel hose Rear axlejunction LR hose RR hose 2 lines · 1/4" front · 1/4" rear main · 1/4" 3/16"

Typical layout from RightQuick kit contents. On kits marked MC→valve, the two lines from the master cylinder go to a proportioning valve first, then two more lines run from the valve to the ABS module.

What changes between builds

  • 2000–2002 kits run two 79" master cylinder lines straight to the ABS module. 2003–2006 kits go through a proportioning valve first.
  • Front lines are a 67" left (LTRQ090) and a 141" right (LTRQ114), or a 143" right (LTRQ115) on the 2003–2006 JL4 kit.

Active brake control (RPO JL4)

Some of these vehicles have active brake control, GM option code JL4. On 2003–2006 JL4 vehicles the lines are routed differently: the master cylinder feeds a proportioning valve, an extra line runs to a pre-charge pump, and the rear is fed by separate left and right lines from the ABS module. (Our 2002 JL4 kits list the same lines as the non-JL4 kits for that year.) Check the Service Parts Identification label (usually in the glove box) for "JL4" before ordering.

Why these lines rust out

NHTSA investigated brake-line corrosion on 1999–2007 GM full-size pickups and SUVs, roughly 5 million vehicles, after 3,645 complaints. When it closed the investigation in 2015, NHTSA concluded the corrosion came from years of road-salt exposure rather than a manufacturing defect, and advised owners in 20 cold-weather states and Washington, D.C. to inspect their brake lines and replace any that are corroded.

Replacing rusted steel with copper-nickel means you're not doing the job again in a few winters.

What you'll need

  • The RightQuick kit for your vehicle (lines arrive pre-cut, pre-flared and numbered)
  • Flare-nut (line) wrenches to avoid rounding the old fittings
  • Penetrating oil for seized nuts
  • DOT 3 brake fluid (check your master cylinder cap for the spec)
  • Brake bleeding equipment and a helper
  • SAE and metric fitting gauges, if you want to confirm a thread before ordering

Installation overview

  1. Lay out the kit and match each numbered line to the diagram before removing anything.
  2. Replace one line at a time so you always have the old line as a routing reference.
  3. Form each new line by hand along the factory path and seat it in the original clips.
  4. Start every nut by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten with a flare-nut wrench.
  5. Bleed the full system, check every joint for leaks under pedal pressure, and road-test at low speed before normal driving.

This is an overview, not a substitute for the factory service procedure.

Frequently asked questions

What size brake lines does a 2000–2006 Suburban or Avalanche use?

Two sizes. In our RightQuick kits for these vehicles, the master cylinder, valve, front and rear main lines are 1/4" tubing. The two short lines across the rear axle are 3/16" tubing.

What brake line fittings does a 2000–2006 Suburban or Avalanche use?

The kit lines use SAE inverted-flare tube nuts in these thread sizes: 1/2-20, 7/16-24, 3/8-24. The tables on this page list the exact fittings on every line.

What flare type do 2000–2006 Suburban or Avalanche brake lines use?

Inverted (SAE double) flares on every RightQuick line for these vehicles. Never use a single flare on a hydraulic brake line.

Do I need a flaring tool to install a RightQuick kit?

No. RightQuick lines arrive pre-cut, pre-flared and fitted with nuts, numbered to match the install diagram. You form each line along the factory path and tighten it. If you have to cut a line, it must be re-flared with a proper double-flare tool before use.

Will this kit fit my GMC Yukon XL or Cadillac Escalade ESV / EXT?

Yes, if the year and configuration match. Every kit on this page is listed for the GMC Yukon XL or Cadillac Escalade ESV / EXT as well. Check the kit's fitment line before ordering, or send us your VIN.

Why do brake lines rust out on these vehicles?

Road salt. NHTSA investigated brake-line corrosion on 1999–2007 GM full-size pickups and SUVs after 3,645 complaints, and in 2015 concluded it was caused by long-term salt exposure, not a manufacturing defect. It advised owners in cold-weather states to inspect their brake lines and replace corroded ones.

Why copper-nickel instead of steel?

Copper-nickel resists road-salt corrosion far better than plain or coated steel, and it bends by hand, which makes routing a full vehicle's worth of line much easier. Every RightQuick line is CuNi 90/10 copper-nickel and is covered by the 4Lifetime Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Is the 2002 Avalanche JL4 kit different from the other 2002 kit?

In our listings, the 2002 JL4 kit (LTRQ134) contains the same lines as the 2000–2002 non-JL4 kit (LTRQ182). If you're unsure which to order, send us your VIN.
