DOT 4 brake fluid has a higher boiling point than DOT 3, which is what you want for performance driving, towing, and repeated hard stops where heat builds fast. It keeps the pedal firm when the brakes get hot.
Is DOT 4 right for me?
Use the DOT rating your vehicle specifies. DOT 4 is glycol-based and can be topped off with DOT 3 or 5.1 in a pinch, but never mix in DOT 5 (silicone) -- it's a different chemistry and isn't compatible with ABS. Because fluid absorbs moisture over time, flush every two to three years.
