Every toolbox has a drawer of wrenches, but grabbing the wrong style for the job is how bolts get rounded and knuckles get bloodied. Here's what each type actually does best — and which one to reach for when you're working on brake and fuel line fittings, where the wrong wrench does the most damage.

Open-End Wrenches

The open-end wrench has a U-shaped jaw that slides onto the fastener from the side. That side approach is its superpower: it's the only basic wrench that can get onto a nut when you can't come at it from above — like a tube nut with a line running through it. The weakness: it grips only two flats, so under heavy load on a soft brass or rust-weakened fitting, it can spread and round the corners.

Box-End Wrenches

The box end fully encircles the fastener and grips all the corners, which makes it the right choice for breaking stubborn bolts loose without rounding them. The trade-offs: you have to lift and reset it after each swing, and it needs clear access over the top of the fastener — which a fitting on a line simply doesn't have.

Ratcheting Wrenches

A ratcheting wrench is a box end with a ratchet mechanism built into the head: swing back and forth without ever lifting the tool off the fastener. In tight engine bays where you get 20 degrees of swing, that turns a ten-minute job into a one-minute job. But a standard ratcheting box end has the same limitation as any box end — it can't slip over a line to reach the nut.

The Line-Fitting Problem (and the Wrenches That Solve It)

Brake and fuel line tube nuts are the worst case: a box end can't get past the line, and an open end rounds the soft nut. The classic answer is the flare-nut wrench (line wrench) — mostly boxed, with a slot just wide enough to pass over the tubing, gripping more flats than an open end. Can a ratcheting wrench replace a socket set?

It complements one rather than replacing it. Sockets still win for recessed fasteners, deep nuts, and torque-wrench work — but in spots where a socket and ratchet won't fit, the ratcheting wrench is faster than anything else.
