What Dielectric Grease Is
Dielectric grease is a silicone-based grease that does not conduct electricity — "dielectric" literally means insulating. Its job isn't to carry current. If It's an Insulator, Won't It Block My Connection?
This is the number-one point of confusion. When you push a connector together or clamp a terminal down, the metal contacts wipe against each other and displace the thin film of grease at the actual contact points. When to Use Dielectric Grease

When Not to Use It
- Don't use it to "fix" a bad connection. It's non-conductive, so it will never restore a corroded or loose contact. Clean the corrosion off first; the grease then keeps it from coming back.
- Don't pack delicate multi-pin connectors solid. On fine-pitch electronic connectors with light contact pressure, use only the thinnest film — and if the service information says to keep the connector dry, follow it.
- Don't substitute it where a conductive compound is specified. Some assemblies call for a conductive electrical joint compound. Dielectric grease is the opposite of that — check what the manufacturer asks for.
- Keep silicone away from paint work. Silicone contamination is a classic cause of fisheye defects in fresh paint, so apply it well away from panels awaiting refinish.
How to Apply It
- Disconnect and inspect the connection. Clean off any existing corrosion.
