If your flare tool isn't matched to the type of flare your car uses, the joint will leak — and a leaking brake line is a brake you can't trust. Here's the short version: most North American vehicles use a 45° SAE double flare, most European and many Asian vehicles use a DIN/ISO bubble flare, and the two are not interchangeable even when the tube and fitting look identical. Get the flare type right, cut and deburr cleanly, and a hand tool will give you a leak-free seal every time.

Why the flare matters more than the fitting

A brake line seals at the flare, not at the threads. The tube nut just squeezes the flared end of the tubing against the matching seat inside the fitting or component. If the flare shape doesn't match that seat, the two metal surfaces never mate fully, and brake fluid finds its way out under pressure — often only when you stand on the pedal hard, which is the worst possible time to discover it.

That's why "it threaded in fine" tells you nothing. A bubble flare will thread happily into a fitting made for a double flare and still leak, because the sealing surfaces are shaped differently. Matching the flare to the system is the whole game.

The three flares you'll actually encounter

45° SAE double flare

This is the standard on virtually all domestic U.S. cars and light trucks, plus many older imports. The tube end is folded back on itself to create a double-thick, cone-shaped sealing face at a 45° angle. That folded wall is what makes it strong enough to survive repeated brake pressure without splitting. A single 45° flare — the tube flared out just once, like you'd see on a fuel or AC line — is not rated for automotive brake pressure. When someone says "double flare," this 45° SAE flare is almost always what they mean.

DIN/ISO bubble flare

Common on European makes (VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes) and many late-model Asian vehicles. Instead of folding the tube all the way back, the bubble flare forms a rounded "bubble" at the end of the tube. The sealing surface is that convex bubble, which presses into a matching concave seat. It's a strong, reliable flare — it's just a different shape, and it needs a tool (or die set) made specifically for it.

37° AN / single flare

You'll see 37° flares on performance and aerospace-style AN fittings, and single 45° flares on non-brake lines. Neither belongs on a street brake system. If you're building with AN hardware you already know it; if you're doing a normal repair, ignore these and stick with double or bubble.

The line to remember: the flares look close, the fittings can even thread together, but the sealing surfaces don't match. Always flare to the type your vehicle and fitting were designed for.

How to tell which flare you need

You don't have to guess. Check in this order:

  1. Identify the vehicle's origin. Domestic U.S. and older Japanese vehicles lean 45° double flare. European and many newer imports lean bubble flare. This is a strong first guess, not a guarantee.
  2. Inspect the old flare. Cut off and look at the end you're replacing. A double-thick cone is a double flare; a rounded bulge is a bubble flare. This is the most reliable tell.
  3. Look at the tube nut and seat. The nut and the seat it threads into are machined for one flare shape. Match the new flare to what the component's port expects, not just to the old nut.

When a repair spans a junction — say, a domestic car with a replacement ABS unit sourced from an import — you can have both flare types on the same vehicle. Check every connection you open.

How to make a leak-free double flare

You'll need a double-flaring tool (bar clamp or hydraulic), the correct adapter/button for your tube size, a tube cutter, and a deburring tool. Copper-nickel and soft tubing flare easily with an inexpensive hand tool; hard steel and stainless are far more forgiving with a hydraulic flaring tool.

  1. Cut the tube square. Use a tube cutter, not a hacksaw. A square cut is the foundation of a good flare — an angled cut flares unevenly and leaks.
  2. Deburr inside and out. Ream the inside edge and knock down the outside so the metal folds cleanly. Burrs cause cracks and prevent a full seal.
  3. Slide the tube nut on first. This is the step everyone forgets. Put the fitting on the line before you flare — you can't add it afterward. Face it the right direction.
  4. Clamp the tube at the right height. Use the adapter/button as a depth gauge so the correct amount of tube sticks above the clamp. Too little and the flare is thin; too much and it mushrooms.
  5. First stage — form the bell. Seat the adapter over the tube and drive it down to fold the tube back into a bell.
  6. Second stage — fold and finish. Remove the adapter and press the cone directly onto the belled end to fold it flat into the finished double flare.
  7. Inspect. The finished face should be smooth, even, and crack-free all the way around. Any split or off-center flare — cut it off and start over. It's cheap to redo now and expensive to redo on the side of the road.

How to make a bubble flare

The process mirrors the double flare, with one key difference: you stop after the first stage, using a bubble-flare die instead of the double-flare cone.

  1. Cut square and deburr, exactly as above.
  2. Slide the correct bubble/DIN tube nut on first.
  3. Clamp the tube at the die's specified height.
  4. Drive the bubble die down to form the rounded bulge — and stop. You do not fold it flat. The bubble itself is the finished flare.
  5. Inspect for an even, symmetrical bubble with no cracks.

Most quality flaring kits include both double-flare adapters and bubble dies, so one tool covers both jobs — you just swap the die and the technique.

Common mistakes that cause leaks

The usual culprits are all avoidable: cutting with a hacksaw instead of a tube cutter, skipping the deburring step, forgetting to slide the nut on first, using the wrong tube height in the clamp, and — the big one — making the wrong type of flare for the fitting. Soft copper-nickel tubing is the most beginner-friendly material to flare because it folds without cracking, which is one more reason it's so popular for DIY repairs. If you're fighting cracked flares on hard steel with a cheap bar clamp, the tool is the problem, not you.
